Narrative:
Prior to handoff to ZOB, both the captain and I thought ZNY had cleared us from 16000 ft to 12000 ft. When we checked on with ZOB, we were going through 14500 ft. ZOB at first said he thought our assigned altitude was 16000 ft. We told him we had been assigned 12000 ft from ZNY. A few seconds later he said for us to descend to 12000 ft and that there as no problem. Without hearing the tapes we don't know if it was a 'hearback' error in the cockpit or a communication discrepancy between the 2 ctrs. Supplemental information from acn 418586: ZNY cleared our flight to 12000 ft on frequency 133.35. Both pilots heard the clearance and agreed on the MCP input.
