Narrative:
Aircraft was cleared to 11000 ft. Captain was flying and descended to 11000 ft. Shortly thereafter, ATC asked what our altitude was and we replied 11000 ft. He said that he showed us at 10000 ft and asked for our altimeter setting. We replied 29.81. He informed us that the correct setting was 28.81 and that we could remain at 10000 ft. Supplemental information from acn 419444: received ATIS information from wilmington airport while trying to receive msp ATIS on 135.35. Thought I heard altimeter setting of 29.53 for wilmington. Got closer to msp and got msp ATIS strong enough on 135.35 and thought I heard 29.81 for the altimeter setting and indicated same on the ATIS section of the airspeed card that I filled out and gave to the captain and first officer. Later with the in-range checklist and the 29.81 altimeter setting was reinforced. Upon leveloff at 11000 ft MSL, approach asked us our altitude because the controller showed us at 10000 ft. He asked the altimeter setting and we responded 29.81. The actual barometric setting was 28.81.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DC10 CREW SET THEIR ALTIMETERS TO 29 PT 91 VERSUS 28 PT 91. THIS RESULTED IN THE ACFT BEING 1000 FT LOW WHEN IT LEVELED OUT.
Narrative: ACFT WAS CLRED TO 11000 FT. CAPT WAS FLYING AND DSNDED TO 11000 FT. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, ATC ASKED WHAT OUR ALT WAS AND WE REPLIED 11000 FT. HE SAID THAT HE SHOWED US AT 10000 FT AND ASKED FOR OUR ALTIMETER SETTING. WE REPLIED 29.81. HE INFORMED US THAT THE CORRECT SETTING WAS 28.81 AND THAT WE COULD REMAIN AT 10000 FT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 419444: RECEIVED ATIS INFO FROM WILMINGTON ARPT WHILE TRYING TO RECEIVE MSP ATIS ON 135.35. THOUGHT I HEARD ALTIMETER SETTING OF 29.53 FOR WILMINGTON. GOT CLOSER TO MSP AND GOT MSP ATIS STRONG ENOUGH ON 135.35 AND THOUGHT I HEARD 29.81 FOR THE ALTIMETER SETTING AND INDICATED SAME ON THE ATIS SECTION OF THE AIRSPD CARD THAT I FILLED OUT AND GAVE TO THE CAPT AND FO. LATER WITH THE IN-RANGE CHKLIST AND THE 29.81 ALTIMETER SETTING WAS REINFORCED. UPON LEVELOFF AT 11000 FT MSL, APCH ASKED US OUR ALT BECAUSE THE CTLR SHOWED US AT 10000 FT. HE ASKED THE ALTIMETER SETTING AND WE RESPONDED 29.81. THE ACTUAL BAROMETRIC SETTING WAS 28.81.
