Narrative:
Aircraft was climbing through FL280 when ATC queried about our altitude. When told 'FL280' ATC responded with 'your clearance was to FL270.' PF had set FL370 in preselect window and we both acknowledged it and I read it back to ATC. We were then given a vector for subsequent climb to FL370.

Title: B737 CREW ASCENDS THROUGH CLRED ALT AFTER ATC MISCOM.
Narrative: ACFT WAS CLBING THROUGH FL280 WHEN ATC QUERIED ABOUT OUR ALT. WHEN TOLD 'FL280' ATC RESPONDED WITH 'YOUR CLRNC WAS TO FL270.' PF HAD SET FL370 IN PRESELECT WINDOW AND WE BOTH ACKNOWLEDGED IT AND I READ IT BACK TO ATC. WE WERE THEN GIVEN A VECTOR FOR SUBSEQUENT CLB TO FL370.
