Narrative:
Approximately 10 mi northwest of scottsdale airport, I reported to scottsdale tower that I was inbound for landing with ATIS information. Tower directed me to report wide downwind abeam chauncy ranch for runway 21. (ATIS said runway 3 was active.) believing a runway change was in progress, I next reported right downwind for runway 21 abeam chauncy ranch. I was told to follow an aircraft on left downwind. I reported aircraft not in sight. Next I reported a wide right base for runway 21 and asked where was my traffic. Tower indicated my traffic was on a 1 mi final. I reported that I did not have the traffic in sight. I then turned final for runway 21 and noticed opposing traffic rolling out on runway 3. At this same time, tower called asked for my position and that I was not in sight. I replied that I was on a 1 mi final for runway 21. Tower indicated runway 3 was active for the first time. I went around and entered a left downwind for runway 3. When I told tower that they had directed me to runway 21, I did not receive any acknowledgment. I was then cleared to land runway 3 with no further discussion about this incident.

Title: PLT OF EXPERIMENTAL ACFT EXECUTES GAR AFTER LINING UP WITH WRONG RWY AT SDL, AS A RESULT OF ATC MISCOM.
Narrative: APPROX 10 MI NW OF SCOTTSDALE ARPT, I RPTED TO SCOTTSDALE TWR THAT I WAS INBOUND FOR LNDG WITH ATIS INFO. TWR DIRECTED ME TO RPT WIDE DOWNWIND ABEAM CHAUNCY RANCH FOR RWY 21. (ATIS SAID RWY 3 WAS ACTIVE.) BELIEVING A RWY CHANGE WAS IN PROGRESS, I NEXT RPTED R DOWNWIND FOR RWY 21 ABEAM CHAUNCY RANCH. I WAS TOLD TO FOLLOW AN ACFT ON L DOWNWIND. I RPTED ACFT NOT IN SIGHT. NEXT I RPTED A WIDE R BASE FOR RWY 21 AND ASKED WHERE WAS MY TFC. TWR INDICATED MY TFC WAS ON A 1 MI FINAL. I RPTED THAT I DID NOT HAVE THE TFC IN SIGHT. I THEN TURNED FINAL FOR RWY 21 AND NOTICED OPPOSING TFC ROLLING OUT ON RWY 3. AT THIS SAME TIME, TWR CALLED ASKED FOR MY POS AND THAT I WAS NOT IN SIGHT. I REPLIED THAT I WAS ON A 1 MI FINAL FOR RWY 21. TWR INDICATED RWY 3 WAS ACTIVE FOR THE FIRST TIME. I WENT AROUND AND ENTERED A L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 3. WHEN I TOLD TWR THAT THEY HAD DIRECTED ME TO RWY 21, I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY ACKNOWLEDGMENT. I WAS THEN CLRED TO LAND RWY 3 WITH NO FURTHER DISCUSSION ABOUT THIS INCIDENT.
