Narrative:
I was practicing touch-and-goes when, on downwind for my second landing, ATC instructed me to pull off at the intersection H. I misunderstood him and proceeded to take off again. The controller asked me if I understood his instruction (to pull off and stop), and I said I didn't. He again instructed me to land, full stop after my third takeoff. I misheard his instructions not to continue a touch-and-go. I called ATC later that evening and spoke with the supervisor who was aware of the situation. He said I was to stop because of possible wake turbulence from a B757 that had departed from the same runway. I told him I misunderstood my instructions and admitted I should have read them back verbatim to ATC. I need to be more attentive and not assume I'm cleared to do a touch-and-go unless told to do so by ATC.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: C172 PLT TOOK OFF WHEN HE WAS TOLD TO TAXI CLR OF RWY.
Narrative: I WAS PRACTICING TOUCH-AND-GOES WHEN, ON DOWNWIND FOR MY SECOND LNDG, ATC INSTRUCTED ME TO PULL OFF AT THE INTXN H. I MISUNDERSTOOD HIM AND PROCEEDED TO TAKE OFF AGAIN. THE CTLR ASKED ME IF I UNDERSTOOD HIS INSTRUCTION (TO PULL OFF AND STOP), AND I SAID I DIDN'T. HE AGAIN INSTRUCTED ME TO LAND, FULL STOP AFTER MY THIRD TKOF. I MISHEARD HIS INSTRUCTIONS NOT TO CONTINUE A TOUCH-AND-GO. I CALLED ATC LATER THAT EVENING AND SPOKE WITH THE SUPVR WHO WAS AWARE OF THE SIT. HE SAID I WAS TO STOP BECAUSE OF POSSIBLE WAKE TURB FROM A B757 THAT HAD DEPARTED FROM THE SAME RWY. I TOLD HIM I MISUNDERSTOOD MY INSTRUCTIONS AND ADMITTED I SHOULD HAVE READ THEM BACK VERBATIM TO ATC. I NEED TO BE MORE ATTENTIVE AND NOT ASSUME I'M CLRED TO DO A TOUCH-AND-GO UNLESS TOLD TO DO SO BY ATC.
