Narrative:
About 180 NM from moscow while at 11100 meters, the controller said (I thought) 'maintain 10100 meters.' I began a slow descent, after descending about 600-700 ft. The controller asked our altitude. I replied 35900 ft and he then said to maintain 11200. We leveled off and returned to 11200. When I read back 10100 meters the controller did not say anything, so I thought it was the appropriate altitude, and we were at top of descent. We did return to 11100 meters and no further comment was made by the controller.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A B767-300ER WERE ADVISED THAT THEY HAD BEEN GIVEN A LOWER LEVELOFF ALT THAN THAT AT WHICH THEY WERE. HOWEVER, AFTER DSNDING SEVERAL HUNDRED FT TOWARD THE NEW ALT, THEY WERE GIVEN THE ALT AT WHICH THEY HAD JUST LEFT.

I REPLIED 35900 FT AND HE THEN SAID TO MAINTAIN 11200. WE LEVELED OFF AND RETURNED TO 11200. WHEN I READ BACK 10100 METERS THE CTLR DID NOT SAY ANYTHING, SO I THOUGHT IT WAS THE APPROPRIATE ALT, AND WE WERE AT TOP OF DSCNT. WE DID RETURN TO 11100 METERS AND NO FURTHER COMMENT WAS MADE BY THE CTLR.
