Narrative:
We were marshalled in to gate by people who appeared to know what they were doing. As we came to a stop the person directing us gave a come-ahead signal, the man behind him gave a stop signal so the captain stopped. At this point the people on the ground seemed satisfied with the aircraft position. At this point I completed my parking flow. A few moments later the captain said he had been given the chocks in signal and called for the 'parking check' which we completed. As I was packing my brain bag, I felt the aircraft moving. I looked out and we were rolling backward. No one on the ground seemed too concerned. I announced 'we're rolling backward' and the captain put on the brakes. We had moved aft about 20 ft. It was a very subtle movement. It could have been deadly. We talked to the station people. The ones that parked us were not qualified, there were no chocks available. The 'chocked' signal meant they were going to look for some. In the end they accepted all responsibility for the instance.

Title: FLC OF PARKED DC10 NOTICED IT ROLLING BACK FROM THE GATE AND STOPPED IT WITH THE ACFT BRAKES. INVESTIGATION FOUND THAT THE MARSHALLER HAD NOT CHOCKED THE WHEELS BEFORE THE CAPT RELEASED THE PARKING BRAKE.
