Narrative:
I (aircraft X) was told to 'position and hold' on runway 9 at bos. Several seconds later, the tower cleared another aircraft (with similar call sign) to take off behind us (we were at an intersection 200 ft from the end, other aircraft was at a taxiway that flowed into runway 9). Hearing the other aircraft respond 'cleared for takeoff,' and realizing that he would probably hit our aircraft, I quickly keyed the microphone and announced that we were still on the runway. The other aircraft aborted his takeoff and we were then cleared for takeoff. The tower controller working that night was a trainee. I found this out when I called the supervisor to make sure we were not at fault. He explained that we were not at fault and the incident was closed.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD BY BOS LCL CTLR. ANOTHER ACR, WITH SIMILAR SOUNDING CALL SIGN, ADVISES READY FOR TKOF AND TWR CLRS THAT ACFT FOR TKOF. ACR ALREADY IN POS AND HOLDING ALERTS TWR AND OTHER ACR OF HIS POS. SECOND ACR ABORTS TKOF. SUPVR LATER ADVISES CTLR TRAINING WAS BEING CONDUCTED.
Narrative: I (ACFT X) WAS TOLD TO 'POS AND HOLD' ON RWY 9 AT BOS. SEVERAL SECONDS LATER, THE TWR CLRED ANOTHER ACFT (WITH SIMILAR CALL SIGN) TO TAKE OFF BEHIND US (WE WERE AT AN INTXN 200 FT FROM THE END, OTHER ACFT WAS AT A TXWY THAT FLOWED INTO RWY 9). HEARING THE OTHER ACFT RESPOND 'CLRED FOR TKOF,' AND REALIZING THAT HE WOULD PROBABLY HIT OUR ACFT, I QUICKLY KEYED THE MIKE AND ANNOUNCED THAT WE WERE STILL ON THE RWY. THE OTHER ACFT ABORTED HIS TKOF AND WE WERE THEN CLRED FOR TKOF. THE TWR CTLR WORKING THAT NIGHT WAS A TRAINEE. I FOUND THIS OUT WHEN I CALLED THE SUPVR TO MAKE SURE WE WERE NOT AT FAULT. HE EXPLAINED THAT WE WERE NOT AT FAULT AND THE INCIDENT WAS CLOSED.
