Narrative:
Training flight for new first officer. Got clearance, set it up in radios. Switched first officer audio panel to ground on #1 radio, but didn't switch my own. Called taxi, and received and heard 'runway 35R.' I started to taxi and first officer said he didn't hear anything. It should have occurred to me that something wasn't right. He then said he could hear (both or headsets). Continue taxi to runway 35. Performed checks and briefing. Then 'clearance' called and asked if we were at the end of runway 35R. I responded 'yes we are and will be ready to go in a min.' it was at this time I noticed radios were set for clearance frequency and not ground. Second time today missed frequency or misset frequency. Must slow down when training and take special notice when first officer/trainee mentions something isn't right. It's not always a problem with the headset. It's the setup!
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CPR INSTRUCTOR PLT WITH TRAINEE PLT TAXIES WITHOUT CLRNC AT TPA.
Narrative: TRAINING FLT FOR NEW FO. GOT CLRNC, SET IT UP IN RADIOS. SWITCHED FO AUDIO PANEL TO GND ON #1 RADIO, BUT DIDN'T SWITCH MY OWN. CALLED TAXI, AND RECEIVED AND HEARD 'RWY 35R.' I STARTED TO TAXI AND FO SAID HE DIDN'T HEAR ANYTHING. IT SHOULD HAVE OCCURRED TO ME THAT SOMETHING WASN'T RIGHT. HE THEN SAID HE COULD HEAR (BOTH OR HEADSETS). CONTINUE TAXI TO RWY 35. PERFORMED CHKS AND BRIEFING. THEN 'CLRNC' CALLED AND ASKED IF WE WERE AT THE END OF RWY 35R. I RESPONDED 'YES WE ARE AND WILL BE READY TO GO IN A MIN.' IT WAS AT THIS TIME I NOTICED RADIOS WERE SET FOR CLRNC FREQ AND NOT GND. SECOND TIME TODAY MISSED FREQ OR MISSET FREQ. MUST SLOW DOWN WHEN TRAINING AND TAKE SPECIAL NOTICE WHEN FO/TRAINEE MENTIONS SOMETHING ISN'T RIGHT. IT'S NOT ALWAYS A PROB WITH THE HEADSET. IT'S THE SETUP!
