Narrative:
Student pilot with cfii on dual cross country from pompano beach, fl, to ft myers, fl, to vero beach, fl, and return to pompano beach, fl. Page ATIS advisory requested VFR transitions be coordinated with ground control. Student requested taxi instructions to runway 13 and complied with instructions, but did not advise ground of VFR transition to northeast. Student was told to advise tower that we would depart VFR to northeast. Tower approved left turn out and instructed to fly 050 degrees. Student pilot complied with tower instruction, but continued to climb above 1200 ft MSL while in class D airspace entering class C airspace. Tower advised that we were violating class C airspace and to descend below 1200 ft. Student pilot descended immediately below 1200 ft MSL and continued on assigned heading of 050 degrees. Tower then approved frequency change upon leaving class D airspace. Contributing factors: 1) cockpit management -- disorganization of charts and flight planning materials for various frequencys to activate flight plan. 2) inaction of CFI to clarify altitude restrs with student prior to takeoff. Corrective action: additional ground training provided on the necessity of good flight planning, cockpit organization and airspace requirements when departing an airport underlying class C airspace.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: C172 INSTRUCTOR AND TRAINEE ENTERED RSW CLASS C AIRSPACE WITHOUT CLRNC.
Narrative: STUDENT PLT WITH CFII ON DUAL XCOUNTRY FROM POMPANO BEACH, FL, TO FT MYERS, FL, TO VERO BEACH, FL, AND RETURN TO POMPANO BEACH, FL. PAGE ATIS ADVISORY REQUESTED VFR TRANSITIONS BE COORDINATED WITH GND CTL. STUDENT REQUESTED TAXI INSTRUCTIONS TO RWY 13 AND COMPLIED WITH INSTRUCTIONS, BUT DID NOT ADVISE GND OF VFR TRANSITION TO NE. STUDENT WAS TOLD TO ADVISE TWR THAT WE WOULD DEPART VFR TO NE. TWR APPROVED L TURN OUT AND INSTRUCTED TO FLY 050 DEGS. STUDENT PLT COMPLIED WITH TWR INSTRUCTION, BUT CONTINUED TO CLB ABOVE 1200 FT MSL WHILE IN CLASS D AIRSPACE ENTERING CLASS C AIRSPACE. TWR ADVISED THAT WE WERE VIOLATING CLASS C AIRSPACE AND TO DSND BELOW 1200 FT. STUDENT PLT DSNDED IMMEDIATELY BELOW 1200 FT MSL AND CONTINUED ON ASSIGNED HDG OF 050 DEGS. TWR THEN APPROVED FREQ CHANGE UPON LEAVING CLASS D AIRSPACE. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: 1) COCKPIT MGMNT -- DISORGANIZATION OF CHARTS AND FLT PLANNING MATERIALS FOR VARIOUS FREQS TO ACTIVATE FLT PLAN. 2) INACTION OF CFI TO CLARIFY ALT RESTRS WITH STUDENT PRIOR TO TKOF. CORRECTIVE ACTION: ADDITIONAL GND TRAINING PROVIDED ON THE NECESSITY OF GOOD FLT PLANNING, COCKPIT ORGANIZATION AND AIRSPACE REQUIREMENTS WHEN DEPARTING AN ARPT UNDERLYING CLASS C AIRSPACE.
