Narrative:
Upon takeoff from buf on dec/xa/98 at XA00 both the first officer and myself noticed a flapping sound coming from under the nose area of the aircraft. When the gear handle was selected up, the nose gear would not retract. We lowered the gear and returned to the gate after an uneventful landing. On inspection of the nosewheel area, it was found that the gear pin had not been removed during preflight. I have always been a proponent of having 'gear pin' on the checklist.
