Narrative:
SID mandates a crossing restr of 2000 ft or below until 4 DME west of oak VOR. SID was briefed correctly as published by first officer (PF). Briefed again on taxi per company procedure. On the climb out with a light aircraft, I called 1000 ft for 2000 ft. First officer acknowledged. Capture/climb rate excessive. I called approaching 2000 ft at 1700 ft. First officer acknowledged. First officer went through 2000 ft. I told him 2000 ft was climb limit until higher after 4 DME. He arrested climb but not before topping out at 2500 ft. Returned expeditiously to 2000 ft. With visibility unrestr, I could see we were clear of any traffic. First officer later explained he transposed SID in his mind. He inadvertently thought he had to be above 2000 ft by 4 DME. Had visibility been marginal, I would have been more aggressive in preventing an altitude bust. I have no suggestions for how to overcome a mind set when the crux of the problem was correctly discussed and briefed.

Title: WDB ACR CARGO ACFT HAD ALT EXCURSION ON INITIAL CLB AT OAK.
Narrative: SID MANDATES A XING RESTR OF 2000 FT OR BELOW UNTIL 4 DME W OF OAK VOR. SID WAS BRIEFED CORRECTLY AS PUBLISHED BY FO (PF). BRIEFED AGAIN ON TAXI PER COMPANY PROC. ON THE CLBOUT WITH A LIGHT ACFT, I CALLED 1000 FT FOR 2000 FT. FO ACKNOWLEDGED. CAPTURE/CLB RATE EXCESSIVE. I CALLED APCHING 2000 FT AT 1700 FT. FO ACKNOWLEDGED. FO WENT THROUGH 2000 FT. I TOLD HIM 2000 FT WAS CLB LIMIT UNTIL HIGHER AFTER 4 DME. HE ARRESTED CLB BUT NOT BEFORE TOPPING OUT AT 2500 FT. RETURNED EXPEDITIOUSLY TO 2000 FT. WITH VISIBILITY UNRESTR, I COULD SEE WE WERE CLR OF ANY TFC. FO LATER EXPLAINED HE TRANSPOSED SID IN HIS MIND. HE INADVERTENTLY THOUGHT HE HAD TO BE ABOVE 2000 FT BY 4 DME. HAD VISIBILITY BEEN MARGINAL, I WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE AGGRESSIVE IN PREVENTING AN ALT BUST. I HAVE NO SUGGESTIONS FOR HOW TO OVERCOME A MIND SET WHEN THE CRUX OF THE PROB WAS CORRECTLY DISCUSSED AND BRIEFED.
