Narrative:
Passenger, from boarding their flight, would not keep her dog in its carrier. After takeoff, she went to the lavatory and let her dog out. I heard it scratching on the door and knocked several times, then opened the door. At that point she threatened me using vulgar language. She was met by supervisor and reprimanded in front of her mother. She was approximately 15-18 yrs old. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter states that she had told the girl before they left the gate that the dog had to remain in the carrier. The third time she spoke to her it was indicated that if this was going to be a problem the dog would have to be checked. She kept the dog in the carrier until after takeoff. When again requested to comply, she swore at the reporter and threatened her. Captain was informed and would not call for police but did have a supervisor meet the aircraft. Reporter states that she is not sure whether it is a company regulation or a federal regulation about keeping the animal in the carrier during the flight. However, the person requesting permission to have an animal on board must sign papers on which they agree to comply with this procedure. In addition, this passenger was reminded of the requirement and deliberately defied the flight attendant warning. The passenger was very defiant in her behavior. Her mother was very supportive of the cabin attendant's position and told her she should have obeyed the rules. Reporter feels pets are becoming a huge problem on board the aircraft.
