Narrative:
While hand flying a descent from 12000 ft to 9000 ft, I was distraction when the PNF lost his place in the before landing checklist and I failed to level off at 9000 ft. The altitude alert sounded at 8700 ft when I immediately started a recovery. Minimum altitude was 8650 ft. The controller did not mention anything about the deviation and there were no other aircraft within 5 mi.
