Narrative:
I'm afraid this probably isn't a very original report. We departed seattle on a beautiful VFR day in the wintertime, headed for boise. We decided to give a 'mountain tour' of mt rainier. As we passed mt rainier, we went through 18000 ft. Needless to say, the altimeter that was set to 30.50 was never set to 29.92 as we went to mt rainier climbing through 18000 ft. Shortly after we leveled off at what we thought was 29000 ft, ZLC asked us what our altitude was. I acknowledged that we were at 28500 ft and climbing to 29000 ft. There were no conflicts. I wish I could say I had some neat idea to keep this from happening again. But, I must confess that I don't. I continually try to be on guard against traps like this, and we have procedures as well (we're supposed to announce the altimeter passing through 18000 ft). This one got around us because of the distraction of a mountain tour and pretty scenery. I will double my efforts to be aware of passing through 18000 ft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A CLBING F28 FLC FAILS TO SET THEIR ALTIMETER TO 29 PT 92 WHILE PASSING THROUGH FL180 CREW WAS DISTRACTED WHILE GIVING A 'MT RAINIER TOUR' TO THE PAX.
Narrative: I'M AFRAID THIS PROBABLY ISN'T A VERY ORIGINAL RPT. WE DEPARTED SEATTLE ON A BEAUTIFUL VFR DAY IN THE WINTERTIME, HEADED FOR BOISE. WE DECIDED TO GIVE A 'MOUNTAIN TOUR' OF MT RAINIER. AS WE PASSED MT RAINIER, WE WENT THROUGH 18000 FT. NEEDLESS TO SAY, THE ALTIMETER THAT WAS SET TO 30.50 WAS NEVER SET TO 29.92 AS WE WENT TO MT RAINIER CLBING THROUGH 18000 FT. SHORTLY AFTER WE LEVELED OFF AT WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS 29000 FT, ZLC ASKED US WHAT OUR ALT WAS. I ACKNOWLEDGED THAT WE WERE AT 28500 FT AND CLBING TO 29000 FT. THERE WERE NO CONFLICTS. I WISH I COULD SAY I HAD SOME NEAT IDEA TO KEEP THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN. BUT, I MUST CONFESS THAT I DON'T. I CONTINUALLY TRY TO BE ON GUARD AGAINST TRAPS LIKE THIS, AND WE HAVE PROCS AS WELL (WE'RE SUPPOSED TO ANNOUNCE THE ALTIMETER PASSING THROUGH 18000 FT). THIS ONE GOT AROUND US BECAUSE OF THE DISTR OF A MOUNTAIN TOUR AND PRETTY SCENERY. I WILL DOUBLE MY EFFORTS TO BE AWARE OF PASSING THROUGH 18000 FT.
