Narrative:
We took off from L2U inbound for ahn. At position #1, +/-5 mi out, called ahn for landing. Instruction from ahn: call 3 mi west of ahn. At position #2 student said '3 mi' to ahn tower. The real position was more like 2 mi out. At position #3 the tower instructed 'enter left downwind runway 27.' student proceeded with turn into left crosswind! Apparently, tower had authority/authorized airplane on takeoff for an early right turnout, which resulted in a near miss. At position #4 I took airplane from student pilot and initiated evasive action to left (seemed direction in which greatest separation in shortest time could be obtained). While this was happening, tower spotted us (I believe) for the first time and instructed us for the first time and instructed us for a right downwind. I gave back plane to student after asking if he understood. Student said yes, and proceeded to position #5 in sketch (I thought he flew to position #5 for wider downwind). At position #6 he turned onto final runway 20, airplane on final to runway 27 (B in sketch). He notices this and aborts landing at position #7. I am flying the plane in attempt to re-enter downwind runway 27 but ahn tower reacts right away with instruction to land on runway 20. At position #8 we are landing on runway 20 as instructed. Tower asking for meeting. Visited tower manager. No further action after talk.

Title: A POTENTIAL CONFLICT ENSUES NEAR THE TFC PATTERN AT AHN, GA. STUDENT PLT RPTED '3 MI W' AT A 2 MI POINT. DEP TFC CONFLICT.
Narrative: WE TOOK OFF FROM L2U INBOUND FOR AHN. AT POS #1, +/-5 MI OUT, CALLED AHN FOR LNDG. INSTRUCTION FROM AHN: CALL 3 MI W OF AHN. AT POS #2 STUDENT SAID '3 MI' TO AHN TWR. THE REAL POS WAS MORE LIKE 2 MI OUT. AT POS #3 THE TWR INSTRUCTED 'ENTER L DOWNWIND RWY 27.' STUDENT PROCEEDED WITH TURN INTO L XWIND! APPARENTLY, TWR HAD AUTH AIRPLANE ON TKOF FOR AN EARLY R TURNOUT, WHICH RESULTED IN A NEAR MISS. AT POS #4 I TOOK AIRPLANE FROM STUDENT PLT AND INITIATED EVASIVE ACTION TO L (SEEMED DIRECTION IN WHICH GREATEST SEPARATION IN SHORTEST TIME COULD BE OBTAINED). WHILE THIS WAS HAPPENING, TWR SPOTTED US (I BELIEVE) FOR THE FIRST TIME AND INSTRUCTED US FOR THE FIRST TIME AND INSTRUCTED US FOR A R DOWNWIND. I GAVE BACK PLANE TO STUDENT AFTER ASKING IF HE UNDERSTOOD. STUDENT SAID YES, AND PROCEEDED TO POS #5 IN SKETCH (I THOUGHT HE FLEW TO POS #5 FOR WIDER DOWNWIND). AT POS #6 HE TURNED ONTO FINAL RWY 20, AIRPLANE ON FINAL TO RWY 27 (B IN SKETCH). HE NOTICES THIS AND ABORTS LNDG AT POS #7. I AM FLYING THE PLANE IN ATTEMPT TO RE-ENTER DOWNWIND RWY 27 BUT AHN TWR REACTS RIGHT AWAY WITH INSTRUCTION TO LAND ON RWY 20. AT POS #8 WE ARE LNDG ON RWY 20 AS INSTRUCTED. TWR ASKING FOR MEETING. VISITED TWR MGR. NO FURTHER ACTION AFTER TALK.
