Narrative:
We were going to swf from iad. After departing the lhy VOR, the FMS next fix was the destination, swf. Our filed flight plan read: lhy-V408-V483-filps-kswf. However, I had failed to notice the omission of: V408-V483-filps... In the FMS flight plan prior to departure. After departing lhy, I turned the aircraft to a heading toward our destination (swf) -- about a 090 degree heading, plus 30 degrees off from V408 (066 degree radial off of lyh). I estimate we were 4-8 NM off course before ATC questioned us and gave us a heading of 040 degrees to reintercept V408. After apologizing to ATC we received a 'no problem' reply. I take this to mean no report was filed.
