Narrative:
Approximately 1 hour after takeoff from ewr we had a 'tire low pressure' warning (#6 tire was 150 psi). Tire pressure continued to slowly decrease resulting in a 'tire failure alert' (35 psi -- remaining). Emergency red tab procedures were complied with and an emergency was declared for approach and landing at anc. A non eventful 35 degree flap landing was accomplished with a turnoff at taxiway M. Company maintenance revealed no damage and that the tire was still inflated. We were cleared to taxi in to our ramp. Emergency was terminated. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the emergency is required per the manual if the tire failure alert is illuminated. The reporter said the tire was flat on arrival and replaced along with its mate on the same axle. The reporter said the aircraft was an MD11 freighter.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD11 IN CRUISE AT FL350 DECLARED AN EMER DUE TO A #6 MAIN TIRE LOW PRESSURE WARNING WHICH RESULTED IN A TIRE FAIL ALERT.
Narrative: APPROX 1 HR AFTER TKOF FROM EWR WE HAD A 'TIRE LOW PRESSURE' WARNING (#6 TIRE WAS 150 PSI). TIRE PRESSURE CONTINUED TO SLOWLY DECREASE RESULTING IN A 'TIRE FAILURE ALERT' (35 PSI -- REMAINING). EMER RED TAB PROCS WERE COMPLIED WITH AND AN EMER WAS DECLARED FOR APCH AND LNDG AT ANC. A NON EVENTFUL 35 DEG FLAP LNDG WAS ACCOMPLISHED WITH A TURNOFF AT TXWY M. COMPANY MAINT REVEALED NO DAMAGE AND THAT THE TIRE WAS STILL INFLATED. WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI IN TO OUR RAMP. EMER WAS TERMINATED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE EMER IS REQUIRED PER THE MANUAL IF THE TIRE FAILURE ALERT IS ILLUMINATED. THE RPTR SAID THE TIRE WAS FLAT ON ARR AND REPLACED ALONG WITH ITS MATE ON THE SAME AXLE. THE RPTR SAID THE ACFT WAS AN MD11 FREIGHTER.
