Narrative:
During final phase of taxi into gate area, under marshaller's guidance, #1 engine brushed an air- conditioning/heater cart that had been parked incorrectly. Cart was hidden from view by stationary jetway shadow. The ramp lighting combined with the stationary jetway were 2 contributing factors. Once under guidance, I did not look to the left of the airplane. When taxiing in, I was looking for the marshaller, so did not see the air-conditioning cart which was parked in the shadow of the jetway. The marshaller did not clear the ramp area properly and he could not see the area behind the jetway, also the cart was painted gray, which contributed to its stealth. Aircraft damage was minor, the #1 engine cowl sustained a dent approximately 5 inches by 2 inches. Aircraft was ferried to maintenance station, returned to service the next day.

Title: A COMMERCIAL FIXED WING MLG ACFT BEING GUIDED INTO A POORLY LIGHTED GATE STRUCK AN IMPROPERLY PARKED AIR- CONDITIONING TRUCK INCURRING DAMAGE TO #1 ENG INLET COWL.
Narrative: DURING FINAL PHASE OF TAXI INTO GATE AREA, UNDER MARSHALLER'S GUIDANCE, #1 ENG BRUSHED AN AIR- CONDITIONING/HEATER CART THAT HAD BEEN PARKED INCORRECTLY. CART WAS HIDDEN FROM VIEW BY STATIONARY JETWAY SHADOW. THE RAMP LIGHTING COMBINED WITH THE STATIONARY JETWAY WERE 2 CONTRIBUTING FACTORS. ONCE UNDER GUIDANCE, I DID NOT LOOK TO THE L OF THE AIRPLANE. WHEN TAXIING IN, I WAS LOOKING FOR THE MARSHALLER, SO DID NOT SEE THE AIR-CONDITIONING CART WHICH WAS PARKED IN THE SHADOW OF THE JETWAY. THE MARSHALLER DID NOT CLR THE RAMP AREA PROPERLY AND HE COULD NOT SEE THE AREA BEHIND THE JETWAY, ALSO THE CART WAS PAINTED GRAY, WHICH CONTRIBUTED TO ITS STEALTH. ACFT DAMAGE WAS MINOR, THE #1 ENG COWL SUSTAINED A DENT APPROX 5 INCHES BY 2 INCHES. ACFT WAS FERRIED TO MAINT STATION, RETURNED TO SVC THE NEXT DAY.
