Narrative:
First officer was PF. Passing through FL180 he forgot to reset his altimeter to 29.92. I missed it in my xchk. Aircraft leveled at FL233.5 before we caught it -- immediately returned to FL230. We were diverting to dtw after a long hold waiting to get into ord. Also had other FMS minor problems that contributed to our distraction. A long duty day, compounded by other distrs, led us both to miss resetting the altimeter. Finally, the first officer was fairly new to the company and the aircraft.
