Narrative:
Flight had been waiting departure from clt to dfw for about 1 hour. Aircraft began takeoff at 2-5 min intervals. We lined up to take off, and from our radar we had a 20 mi corridor to the southwest that was clear of showers. After a normal takeoff, runway at clt was dry, but one could see that within the hour the WX would deteriorate. My concern is that once airborne we were restr from climbing by ZTL due to excessive air traffic. ZTL was 'overwhelmed' by the traffic and WX. (Why send aircraft into this situation?) saturation was at its peak, and resulted in a bumpy ride for us, vectoring around the WX and trying to work with a 'taxed' ZTL controller. Clearly, aircraft at clt should have been kept on the ground until the situation improved. (Poor decision making by ATC.)
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR FLC RPTS OF WX DELAY ON GND AT CLT THEN VECTORS FROM ZTL FOR WX AVOIDANCE WHILE BEING HELD TO AN ALT LOWER THAN DESIRED BECAUSE OF TFC SATURATION.
Narrative: FLT HAD BEEN WAITING DEP FROM CLT TO DFW FOR ABOUT 1 HR. ACFT BEGAN TKOF AT 2-5 MIN INTERVALS. WE LINED UP TO TAKE OFF, AND FROM OUR RADAR WE HAD A 20 MI CORRIDOR TO THE SW THAT WAS CLR OF SHOWERS. AFTER A NORMAL TKOF, RWY AT CLT WAS DRY, BUT ONE COULD SEE THAT WITHIN THE HR THE WX WOULD DETERIORATE. MY CONCERN IS THAT ONCE AIRBORNE WE WERE RESTR FROM CLBING BY ZTL DUE TO EXCESSIVE AIR TFC. ZTL WAS 'OVERWHELMED' BY THE TFC AND WX. (WHY SEND ACFT INTO THIS SIT?) SATURATION WAS AT ITS PEAK, AND RESULTED IN A BUMPY RIDE FOR US, VECTORING AROUND THE WX AND TRYING TO WORK WITH A 'TAXED' ZTL CTLR. CLRLY, ACFT AT CLT SHOULD HAVE BEEN KEPT ON THE GND UNTIL THE SIT IMPROVED. (POOR DECISION MAKING BY ATC.)
