Narrative:
Center asked us if we had switched our altimeters to 29.92. We had not, resulting in an altitude error of -400 ft. Traffic was passing underneath right to left at an unknown altitude. Switchover was not done due to ATC xmissions as we neared and passed FL180. TCASII (which we do not have) would have alerted us to the error by showing crossing traffic less than standard separation. Strongly recommend TCASII for freighter MD11's.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF AN MD11 UNDERSHOT CRUISE ALT DUE TO FORGETTING TO RESET THEIR ALTIMETERS WHEN CLBING THROUGH FL180. ARTCC CTLR ASKED THE CREW IF THEY HAD RESET ALTIMETERS, TO WHICH THE CREW FOUND THAT THEY HAD NOT.
Narrative: CTR ASKED US IF WE HAD SWITCHED OUR ALTIMETERS TO 29.92. WE HAD NOT, RESULTING IN AN ALT ERROR OF -400 FT. TFC WAS PASSING UNDERNEATH R TO L AT AN UNKNOWN ALT. SWITCHOVER WAS NOT DONE DUE TO ATC XMISSIONS AS WE NEARED AND PASSED FL180. TCASII (WHICH WE DO NOT HAVE) WOULD HAVE ALERTED US TO THE ERROR BY SHOWING XING TFC LTSS. STRONGLY RECOMMEND TCASII FOR FREIGHTER MD11'S.
