Narrative:
After landing on runway 22L at ewr, tower cleared us to cross runway 22R and contact ground control. We held short of taxiway D and contacted ground control. He told us to make a left turn on taxiway D. I am not certain what we read back, but we proceeded to taxiway a and made a left turn. He queried our intentions. We told him that we were to turn onto taxiway a, then he corrected us and instructed us to now use taxiway a because we were now located on taxiway a. The ground controller indicated that his initial instructions were to turn left on taxiway D. The problem arose because the controller assumed we were proceeding to the ramp via taxiway D. We were actually going to the other company ramp. Because the controller assumed our destination to be different than it actually was, he assumed taxiway D would be the most direct route. Because I wanted to hear 'taxiway a,' I proceeded on taxiway a, even though I had apparently been cleared onto taxiway D.

Title: FK27 CREW USES WRONG TAXI RTE AFTER LNDG AT EWR.
Narrative: AFTER LNDG ON RWY 22L AT EWR, TWR CLRED US TO CROSS RWY 22R AND CONTACT GND CTL. WE HELD SHORT OF TXWY D AND CONTACTED GND CTL. HE TOLD US TO MAKE A L TURN ON TXWY D. I AM NOT CERTAIN WHAT WE READ BACK, BUT WE PROCEEDED TO TXWY A AND MADE A L TURN. HE QUERIED OUR INTENTIONS. WE TOLD HIM THAT WE WERE TO TURN ONTO TXWY A, THEN HE CORRECTED US AND INSTRUCTED US TO NOW USE TXWY A BECAUSE WE WERE NOW LOCATED ON TXWY A. THE GND CTLR INDICATED THAT HIS INITIAL INSTRUCTIONS WERE TO TURN L ON TXWY D. THE PROB AROSE BECAUSE THE CTLR ASSUMED WE WERE PROCEEDING TO THE RAMP VIA TXWY D. WE WERE ACTUALLY GOING TO THE OTHER COMPANY RAMP. BECAUSE THE CTLR ASSUMED OUR DEST TO BE DIFFERENT THAN IT ACTUALLY WAS, HE ASSUMED TXWY D WOULD BE THE MOST DIRECT RTE. BECAUSE I WANTED TO HEAR 'TXWY A,' I PROCEEDED ON TXWY A, EVEN THOUGH I HAD APPARENTLY BEEN CLRED ONTO TXWY D.
