Air Traffic Incident | Operational Error |
Narrative:
Captain was PNF. First officer was PF. Autoplt was engaged. While captain was communicating on interphone with the flight attendants, ATC directed a 10 degree left turn for traffic. First officer acknowledged and complied by changing heading 10 degrees left. About 2 mins later, ATC requested another 10 degree left turn. This time, captain acknowledged and first officer again turned the aircraft to the left. ATC then advised of traffic ahead which was acquired visually and on TCASII. Shortly thereafter, ATC directed an immediate right turn to 295 degrees and make it 'tight.' TCASII TA occurred. First officer disconnected autoplt and increased angle of bank as TCASII RA occurred to 'monitor vertical speed.' TCASII RA commands were complied with as first officer turned aircraft. No altitude change was required or made. Traffic was observed on TCASII to be descending and passed to the left by approximately 2-5 mi and 500 ft below our altitude. 'Clear of conflict' then was annunciated by TCASII prior to completing turn to 295 degrees.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ZTL ISSUED AN A319 CREW, AT FL350, 2 10-DEG TURNS L, THEN AN IMMEDIATE TIGHT TURN TO THE R TO AVOID CONVERGING TFC. A TCASII RA WAS RECEIVED AND EVASIVE ACTION WAS TAKEN BY THE CREW TO REMAIN CLR OF THE TFC.
Narrative: CAPT WAS PNF. FO WAS PF. AUTOPLT WAS ENGAGED. WHILE CAPT WAS COMMUNICATING ON INTERPHONE WITH THE FLT ATTENDANTS, ATC DIRECTED A 10 DEG L TURN FOR TFC. FO ACKNOWLEDGED AND COMPLIED BY CHANGING HDG 10 DEGS L. ABOUT 2 MINS LATER, ATC REQUESTED ANOTHER 10 DEG L TURN. THIS TIME, CAPT ACKNOWLEDGED AND FO AGAIN TURNED THE ACFT TO THE L. ATC THEN ADVISED OF TFC AHEAD WHICH WAS ACQUIRED VISUALLY AND ON TCASII. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, ATC DIRECTED AN IMMEDIATE R TURN TO 295 DEGS AND MAKE IT 'TIGHT.' TCASII TA OCCURRED. FO DISCONNECTED AUTOPLT AND INCREASED ANGLE OF BANK AS TCASII RA OCCURRED TO 'MONITOR VERT SPD.' TCASII RA COMMANDS WERE COMPLIED WITH AS FO TURNED ACFT. NO ALT CHANGE WAS REQUIRED OR MADE. TFC WAS OBSERVED ON TCASII TO BE DSNDING AND PASSED TO THE L BY APPROX 2-5 MI AND 500 FT BELOW OUR ALT. 'CLR OF CONFLICT' THEN WAS ANNUNCIATED BY TCASII PRIOR TO COMPLETING TURN TO 295 DEGS.
