Narrative:
After leaving amigo intersection on paradise 2 arrival to lax (10- 2K) the copilot (PF) started a descent out of 16000 ft to cross tejay at 12000 ft as published. ATC controller called (approximately 15700 ft) to verify descending and asked if we just started down on our own. We said yes. He said no problem this time, but the clearance was 'expect' to cross tejay at 12000 ft. I think the copilot heard just 'cross tejay at 12000 ft' in that earlier transmission. The controller then said to continue descent via the arrival.
