Narrative:
The captain had to check in with the company and also talk to the passenger. So, I took over control of the radios while monitoring the autoplt. We were in a hold on the robbinsville 1 arrival (eno.RBV1). While turning onto the first downwind leg, ATC instructed us to 'continue downwind and I'll have an approach clearance for you shortly.' a few seconds later the captain resumed radio control. After the 1 min leg was up, I turned inbound on the hold. ATC then said 'you aren't turning back towards robbinsville are you?' we said 'say again' and he said 'disregard' we then had a traffic alert from 800 ft above us. Several seconds later he had us turn early to the outbound leg. No further problems. It was my understanding that I was to remain in the hold because the controller used 'holding' terminology rather than assigning me 'remain on current heading' or 'fly heading 250 degrees until advised.'

Title: AN EMB145 FO TURNS BACK INBOUND IN THE RBV HOLDING PATTERN WHEN THE N90 CTLR HAD ASKED THE FLT TO 'CONTINUE DOWNWIND (LEG).'
Narrative: THE CAPT HAD TO CHK IN WITH THE COMPANY AND ALSO TALK TO THE PAX. SO, I TOOK OVER CTL OF THE RADIOS WHILE MONITORING THE AUTOPLT. WE WERE IN A HOLD ON THE ROBBINSVILLE 1 ARR (ENO.RBV1). WHILE TURNING ONTO THE FIRST DOWNWIND LEG, ATC INSTRUCTED US TO 'CONTINUE DOWNWIND AND I'LL HAVE AN APCH CLRNC FOR YOU SHORTLY.' A FEW SECONDS LATER THE CAPT RESUMED RADIO CTL. AFTER THE 1 MIN LEG WAS UP, I TURNED INBOUND ON THE HOLD. ATC THEN SAID 'YOU AREN'T TURNING BACK TOWARDS ROBBINSVILLE ARE YOU?' WE SAID 'SAY AGAIN' AND HE SAID 'DISREGARD' WE THEN HAD A TFC ALERT FROM 800 FT ABOVE US. SEVERAL SECONDS LATER HE HAD US TURN EARLY TO THE OUTBOUND LEG. NO FURTHER PROBS. IT WAS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT I WAS TO REMAIN IN THE HOLD BECAUSE THE CTLR USED 'HOLDING' TERMINOLOGY RATHER THAN ASSIGNING ME 'REMAIN ON CURRENT HDG' OR 'FLY HDG 250 DEGS UNTIL ADVISED.'
