Narrative:
First officer was flying aircraft. FL310 was set in MCP. Crossing restr to cross lukes intersection at FL240 was on legs page of FMC per unarm/arrival to clt. We hit moderate turbulence. First officer got on PA to tell passenger to be seated. While he was on PA I mistakenly thought we had been cleared to cross lukes intersection at FL240. I set in FL240 in MCP and hit 1000 FPM vertical speed descent. When first officer got off PA he asked if we were cleared to FL240. I said yes. ZTL said say assigned altitude. I said lukes at FL240. ZTL said negative maintain FL290. We had descended to FL285 and climbed to FL290.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FO OF A B737-300 STARTED DSNDING ON STAR ARR BY MISTAKE SINCE THE CAPT HAD RESPONDED TO THE WRONG CALL SIGN AND SET THE NEW ALT IN THE FMC MCP. ARTCC RADAR CTLR CAUGHT THEIR MISTAKES AND RECLRED THEM TO AN ALT THROUGH WHICH THEY HAD JUST DSNDED.
Narrative: FO WAS FLYING ACFT. FL310 WAS SET IN MCP. XING RESTR TO CROSS LUKES INTXN AT FL240 WAS ON LEGS PAGE OF FMC PER UNARM/ARR TO CLT. WE HIT MODERATE TURB. FO GOT ON PA TO TELL PAX TO BE SEATED. WHILE HE WAS ON PA I MISTAKENLY THOUGHT WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO CROSS LUKES INTXN AT FL240. I SET IN FL240 IN MCP AND HIT 1000 FPM VERT SPD DSCNT. WHEN FO GOT OFF PA HE ASKED IF WE WERE CLRED TO FL240. I SAID YES. ZTL SAID SAY ASSIGNED ALT. I SAID LUKES AT FL240. ZTL SAID NEGATIVE MAINTAIN FL290. WE HAD DSNDED TO FL285 AND CLBED TO FL290.
