Narrative:
Upon departure from runway 9L, we were given a left turn to a 300 degree heading to intercept the thundr transition. We were given a climb to 8000 ft. In the turn departure control called traffic at 12 O'clock and reclred us to stop the climb at 7000 ft. We were climbing through 5000 ft and through heading 330 degrees during this call. I, the PF and first officer, saw the traffic at 2 O'clock and approximately 2 mi heading about 250 degrees and slightly above us. About 2 seconds later, the TCASII gave us an RA to monitor vertical speed then commanded a descent. I descended at 1500 FPM as the other aircraft flew over us at approximately 200-500 ft. When the TCASII announced clear of conflict we resumed our climb to 7000 ft and continued the flight.

Title: AN ACR MD80, SUPER 80, FLC WERE ADVISED OF CONFLICTING TFC DURING A DEP AND GIVEN A LOWER ASSIGNED ALT TO AVOID, BUT THE TFC WAS EVEN LOWER THAN EXPECTED AND AN NMAC OCCURRED.
Narrative: UPON DEP FROM RWY 9L, WE WERE GIVEN A L TURN TO A 300 DEG HDG TO INTERCEPT THE THUNDR TRANSITION. WE WERE GIVEN A CLB TO 8000 FT. IN THE TURN DEP CTL CALLED TFC AT 12 O'CLOCK AND RECLRED US TO STOP THE CLB AT 7000 FT. WE WERE CLBING THROUGH 5000 FT AND THROUGH HDG 330 DEGS DURING THIS CALL. I, THE PF AND FO, SAW THE TFC AT 2 O'CLOCK AND APPROX 2 MI HDG ABOUT 250 DEGS AND SLIGHTLY ABOVE US. ABOUT 2 SECONDS LATER, THE TCASII GAVE US AN RA TO MONITOR VERT SPD THEN COMMANDED A DSCNT. I DSNDED AT 1500 FPM AS THE OTHER ACFT FLEW OVER US AT APPROX 200-500 FT. WHEN THE TCASII ANNOUNCED CLR OF CONFLICT WE RESUMED OUR CLB TO 7000 FT AND CONTINUED THE FLT.
