Narrative:
We were asked to descend to cross cofax at and maintain FL250. We read back the command and set the altitude into the altitude capture mode. I set vertical speed mode to approximately 1200 FPM and we began to descend from FL310. The first officer left the center frequency to get ATIS and I thought I had the speaker volume up high enough to hear the frequency (center) but did not. We flew in silence missing a center xfer. Several mins later, we were over cofax and I looked at our altitude tape that was going through FL245. I pushed altitude hold and the autoplt leveled off at FL240. I began to climb back to FL250 and we got a TA showing an aircraft above us by +900 ft. I stopped at approximately FL240 and we contacted ZNY. They told us to call them when we landed. We noticed that we had misset the altitude capture to FL216 and failed to doublechk it.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF A CANADAIR, CL65, OVERSHOT DSCNT ALT DUE TO MISSETTING THE ALT CAPTURE MODE ON THE AUTOPLT. WHEN CLBING BACK TO ASSIGNED, A TCASII RA GAVE CONFLICT ALERT AND RESOLUTION ON AN ACFT ABOVE SO HE LEVELED OFF THE ACFT. IN THE MEANTIME, THE RADIO COM WAS TOO LOW AND THEY MISSED ATC CALLS FOR ALT AMENDMENT.
Narrative: WE WERE ASKED TO DSND TO CROSS COFAX AT AND MAINTAIN FL250. WE READ BACK THE COMMAND AND SET THE ALT INTO THE ALT CAPTURE MODE. I SET VERT SPD MODE TO APPROX 1200 FPM AND WE BEGAN TO DSND FROM FL310. THE FO LEFT THE CTR FREQ TO GET ATIS AND I THOUGHT I HAD THE SPEAKER VOLUME UP HIGH ENOUGH TO HEAR THE FREQ (CTR) BUT DID NOT. WE FLEW IN SILENCE MISSING A CTR XFER. SEVERAL MINS LATER, WE WERE OVER COFAX AND I LOOKED AT OUR ALT TAPE THAT WAS GOING THROUGH FL245. I PUSHED ALT HOLD AND THE AUTOPLT LEVELED OFF AT FL240. I BEGAN TO CLB BACK TO FL250 AND WE GOT A TA SHOWING AN ACFT ABOVE US BY +900 FT. I STOPPED AT APPROX FL240 AND WE CONTACTED ZNY. THEY TOLD US TO CALL THEM WHEN WE LANDED. WE NOTICED THAT WE HAD MISSET THE ALT CAPTURE TO FL216 AND FAILED TO DOUBLECHK IT.
