Narrative:
Climbing out of ewr on ewr 6. Aircraft on autoplt climbing to 6000 ft in profile mode turning to intercept col 350 degree radial. Aircraft exceeded 6000 ft by 200 ft, +/-50 ft. Autoplt did not capture altitude. Autoplt disengaged by me. Aircraft hand flown down to 6000 ft. During descent, aircraft flown to 5800 ft MSL. I corrected back to 6000 ft and leveled off. Remainder of flight was uneventful. I do not know why the autoplt didn't capture. 6000 ft was set in altitude alerter and I'm certain the FMS was armed. Perhaps the climb rate was such, greater than 3000 FPM, the autoplt didn't have time to capture.
