Narrative:
We were cleared to our destination via the san jose eight departure and told to maintain 5000 ft. The departure also says to maintain 5000 ft. On departure we had completed our turn to the 110 degree heading within 4 NM of the VOR, as the departure requires. We were still climbing to 5000 ft, while changing the #1 navigation radio to oak VOR to intercept the 121 degree radial, as required in the SID. During the navigation frequency change I became slightly preoccupied with selecting the radial on my side and ballooned through 5000 ft slightly. I quickly arrested our climb at about 5150 ft to maybe 5200 ft and began descending back to 5000 ft. At this time bay departure said to climb and maintain 15000 ft, so I once again started climbing. My understanding is that you have 299 ft either side of your assigned altitude anyway so I don't think there was any real problem and the controller did not say anything either.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF A LEARJET, LR35, OVERSHOT INTERMEDIATE ALT DURING DEP SID DUE TO PREOCCUPATION WITH RETUNING HIS VOR RECEIVER.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED TO OUR DEST VIA THE SAN JOSE EIGHT DEP AND TOLD TO MAINTAIN 5000 FT. THE DEP ALSO SAYS TO MAINTAIN 5000 FT. ON DEP WE HAD COMPLETED OUR TURN TO THE 110 DEG HDG WITHIN 4 NM OF THE VOR, AS THE DEP REQUIRES. WE WERE STILL CLBING TO 5000 FT, WHILE CHANGING THE #1 NAV RADIO TO OAK VOR TO INTERCEPT THE 121 DEG RADIAL, AS REQUIRED IN THE SID. DURING THE NAV FREQ CHANGE I BECAME SLIGHTLY PREOCCUPIED WITH SELECTING THE RADIAL ON MY SIDE AND BALLOONED THROUGH 5000 FT SLIGHTLY. I QUICKLY ARRESTED OUR CLB AT ABOUT 5150 FT TO MAYBE 5200 FT AND BEGAN DSNDING BACK TO 5000 FT. AT THIS TIME BAY DEP SAID TO CLB AND MAINTAIN 15000 FT, SO I ONCE AGAIN STARTED CLBING. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT YOU HAVE 299 FT EITHER SIDE OF YOUR ASSIGNED ALT ANYWAY SO I DON'T THINK THERE WAS ANY REAL PROB AND THE CTLR DID NOT SAY ANYTHING EITHER.
