Narrative:
Taxiing to the hold short line of runway 32 rap for departure, we were given a clearance we believed was 'after takeoff turn right to heading 150 degrees.' at this point we noted traffic in the area we would be turning towards and briefed to keep the traffic in sight and maintain visual separation from it. After takeoff we began a right turn and were informed by tower we were to turn left to 150 degrees. We immediately complied and questioned the controller about the original clearance. He said we were originally cleared to turn left, not right. We believe we were cleared to turn right, as it prompted us to brief plans to avoid traffic in that area. We do not feel any conflicts were created in this event. Possible causes of this miscom would be the fact this is a daily scheduled run at a low traffic field which almost always departs to the right. My solution to this problem will be to verify a clearance with a turn to the right when traffic is observed in that area.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A FOKKER F27 TURNED THE WRONG WAY AFTER TKOF DUE TO A MISUNDERSTANDING OF THEIR ORIGINAL DEP CLRNC.
Narrative: TAXIING TO THE HOLD SHORT LINE OF RWY 32 RAP FOR DEP, WE WERE GIVEN A CLRNC WE BELIEVED WAS 'AFTER TKOF TURN R TO HEADING 150 DEGS.' AT THIS POINT WE NOTED TFC IN THE AREA WE WOULD BE TURNING TOWARDS AND BRIEFED TO KEEP THE TFC IN SIGHT AND MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION FROM IT. AFTER TKOF WE BEGAN A R TURN AND WERE INFORMED BY TWR WE WERE TO TURN L TO 150 DEGS. WE IMMEDIATELY COMPLIED AND QUESTIONED THE CTLR ABOUT THE ORIGINAL CLRNC. HE SAID WE WERE ORIGINALLY CLRED TO TURN L, NOT R. WE BELIEVE WE WERE CLRED TO TURN R, AS IT PROMPTED US TO BRIEF PLANS TO AVOID TFC IN THAT AREA. WE DO NOT FEEL ANY CONFLICTS WERE CREATED IN THIS EVENT. POSSIBLE CAUSES OF THIS MISCOM WOULD BE THE FACT THIS IS A DAILY SCHEDULED RUN AT A LOW TFC FIELD WHICH ALMOST ALWAYS DEPARTS TO THE R. MY SOLUTION TO THIS PROB WILL BE TO VERIFY A CLRNC WITH A TURN TO THE R WHEN TFC IS OBSERVED IN THAT AREA.
