Narrative:

After landing at dfw runway 31R, held short of runway 35C on taxiway Y. Aircraft ahead was cleared to cross runway 35C and the rest of the transmission was blocked. Assuming it was clearance for us to cross as well and not wanting to delay traffic behind us that was also waiting to cross, I asked the first officer to verify the last. The first officer asked the controller we are short of runway 35C at taxiway Y and understand we were cleared to cross runway 35C to hold short of runway 35L. The controller answered another call then to us said that is correct. My first officer acknowledged simply with roger, whereupon I started to cross but insisted that the readback be repeated including the runway we were crossing as well as the runway we were to hold short of (primarily because several calls had been blocked). I had crossed the hold bars but stopped short of the runway when the controller yelled at us and landed several aircraft on runway 35C refusing to answer my radio calls to confirm that the tower knew we were over the hold bars. The controller was making unjustified remarks that aggravated the situation. After hearing the tape it turns out the controller had stepped on our transmission that stated our position before hearing the rest of the sentence that we understood we were clear to cross runway 35C thus causing the scenario. The tower supervisor apologized and said no loss of separation occurred.

Title: S80 RWY INCURSION AT DFW.

Narrative: AFTER LNDG AT DFW RWY 31R, HELD SHORT OF RWY 35C ON TXWY Y. ACFT AHEAD WAS CLRED TO CROSS RWY 35C AND THE REST OF THE XMISSION WAS BLOCKED. ASSUMING IT WAS CLRNC FOR US TO CROSS AS WELL AND NOT WANTING TO DELAY TFC BEHIND US THAT WAS ALSO WAITING TO CROSS, I ASKED THE FO TO VERIFY THE LAST. THE FO ASKED THE CTLR WE ARE SHORT OF RWY 35C AT TXWY Y AND UNDERSTAND WE WERE CLRED TO CROSS RWY 35C TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 35L. THE CTLR ANSWERED ANOTHER CALL THEN TO US SAID THAT IS CORRECT. MY FO ACKNOWLEDGED SIMPLY WITH ROGER, WHEREUPON I STARTED TO CROSS BUT INSISTED THAT THE READBACK BE REPEATED INCLUDING THE RWY WE WERE XING AS WELL AS THE RWY WE WERE TO HOLD SHORT OF (PRIMARILY BECAUSE SEVERAL CALLS HAD BEEN BLOCKED). I HAD CROSSED THE HOLD BARS BUT STOPPED SHORT OF THE RWY WHEN THE CTLR YELLED AT US AND LANDED SEVERAL ACFT ON RWY 35C REFUSING TO ANSWER MY RADIO CALLS TO CONFIRM THAT THE TWR KNEW WE WERE OVER THE HOLD BARS.
