Narrative:

Taxiing in to gate xz in phl, we stopped and waited for a marshaller to lead us in to the gate. A fuel truck was parked to the left in a 'safe' area outside of the white line. The clearance looked 'close' but when the marshaller arrived he motioned for us to continue taxiing. Upon stopping at the gate spot, we were advised by maintenance that the bottom left wingtip scraped the fuel truck. To prevent this from happening again, our airline should not tell the pilots that any object outside of the white lines will clear the aircraft. If any object appears close, the plane should be stopped and a wing walker requested.
