Narrative:
New first officer in training flying aircraft. At station passage (VOR unlock and in cone of confusion) or just prior, cockpit crew was summoned by flight attendants over intercom for temperature adjustment in cabin. Captain was distraction momentarily to make adjustment and respond to call. While adjusting cabin temperature controller, first officer overshot outbound 089 degree radial for arrival into phx. Center called for action (said 10 mi north of course). DME read 7.2. First officer had already initiated turn (late) and was in 30 degree angle of bank passing heading of 110 degrees to correct. Center called to increase heading to 130 degrees. We complied and received 'guidance' from ZLA. Our fault for allowing a distraction to misalign aircraft. Aviate, navigation, communicate -- no excuse! Lesson relearned. Lesson: false sense of security for new first officer with check airman in old 200 basic VOR aircraft and inattn to detail. My (check airman) error -- thoroughly debriefed to new first officer. It was her first leg with me on IOE.

Title: AN ACR INSTRUCTOR IN A B737-200 HAS AN FO, ON THE FIRST IOE FLT, WHO FORGETS TO TURN TO THE OUTBOUND HDG ON A STAR. AN ALERT ARTCC CTLR CORRECTS THE FLC.
Narrative: NEW FO IN TRAINING FLYING ACFT. AT STATION PASSAGE (VOR UNLOCK AND IN CONE OF CONFUSION) OR JUST PRIOR, COCKPIT CREW WAS SUMMONED BY FLT ATTENDANTS OVER INTERCOM FOR TEMP ADJUSTMENT IN CABIN. CAPT WAS DISTR MOMENTARILY TO MAKE ADJUSTMENT AND RESPOND TO CALL. WHILE ADJUSTING CABIN TEMP CONTROLLER, FO OVERSHOT OUTBOUND 089 DEG RADIAL FOR ARR INTO PHX. CTR CALLED FOR ACTION (SAID 10 MI N OF COURSE). DME READ 7.2. FO HAD ALREADY INITIATED TURN (LATE) AND WAS IN 30 DEG ANGLE OF BANK PASSING HDG OF 110 DEGS TO CORRECT. CTR CALLED TO INCREASE HDG TO 130 DEGS. WE COMPLIED AND RECEIVED 'GUIDANCE' FROM ZLA. OUR FAULT FOR ALLOWING A DISTR TO MISALIGN ACFT. AVIATE, NAV, COMMUNICATE -- NO EXCUSE! LESSON RELEARNED. LESSON: FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY FOR NEW FO WITH CHK AIRMAN IN OLD 200 BASIC VOR ACFT AND INATTN TO DETAIL. MY (CHK AIRMAN) ERROR -- THOROUGHLY DEBRIEFED TO NEW FO.
