Narrative:
A temporary displaced threshold at myr appears to comply with the requirements (temporary lighting, runway number moved, etc), but when landing toward the closed portion at dusk (before the runway end lights are very apparent) it was very difficult to determine the end of the runway. There were virtually no visible cues as to where the closed portion began. If landing over the closed portion, the present requirements are adequate as the pilot has time to 'pick out' where the open portion actually begins, but when landing toward the closed portion the pilot has very little information to determine amount of runway left. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the airport director at myr indicates that the temporary displaced threshold has been removed for several months, and that he only recalls one complaint from a pilot regarding the difficulty in determining the closed portion.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC MEMBER INDICATES TEMPORARY DISPLACED THRESHOLD NOT VISIBLE DURING ROLLOUT.
Narrative: A TEMPORARY DISPLACED THRESHOLD AT MYR APPEARS TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS (TEMPORARY LIGHTING, RWY NUMBER MOVED, ETC), BUT WHEN LNDG TOWARD THE CLOSED PORTION AT DUSK (BEFORE THE RWY END LIGHTS ARE VERY APPARENT) IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO DETERMINE THE END OF THE RWY. THERE WERE VIRTUALLY NO VISIBLE CUES AS TO WHERE THE CLOSED PORTION BEGAN. IF LNDG OVER THE CLOSED PORTION, THE PRESENT REQUIREMENTS ARE ADEQUATE AS THE PLT HAS TIME TO 'PICK OUT' WHERE THE OPEN PORTION ACTUALLY BEGINS, BUT WHEN LNDG TOWARD THE CLOSED PORTION THE PLT HAS VERY LITTLE INFO TO DETERMINE AMOUNT OF RWY LEFT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE ARPT DIRECTOR AT MYR INDICATES THAT THE TEMPORARY DISPLACED THRESHOLD HAS BEEN REMOVED FOR SEVERAL MONTHS, AND THAT HE ONLY RECALLS ONE COMPLAINT FROM A PLT REGARDING THE DIFFICULTY IN DETERMINING THE CLOSED PORTION.
