Narrative:
Flying with ab initio first officer. Taxi out took 4 mins during which first officer repeatedly asked questions. She attempted to obtain a clearance the whole way with the frequency in inactive status. She had completed no pretkof flows, though instructed to. She did do these after we stopped at the runway and then I fixed her radio so she could talk to clearance. At this time I completed my system checks. She took out and mounted a departure procedure calling for runway heading. I was under the impression this was to be our clearance. Actually, we were to fly an airway in the same direction. We maintained course guidance/airway width. Nonetheless, I guess I should have provided further assistance to her in obtaining/reading clearance. This also occurred after being continuously on duty all night. Ab initio? Bad idea.
