Narrative:
My student and I were performing a mock chkride near the fort atkinson, wi, airport (61C). We entered the traffic pattern, and noticed personnel and equipment on the side of runway. We both thought the people were mowing the grass near the runway. We turned final, and the personnel and equipment were still off the runway in the grass area. We landed, waited for another airplane to land, and then back-taxied for departure. When an airplane is on the approach end of the runway at 61C because of the curvature of the runway, you cannot see the departure end. We announced our takeoff, and began the roll. Just after liftoff, we noticed the personnel and equipment on the runway. We continued our flight to madison, and while en route I called green bay FSS who stated that there was a NOTAM for the closure of the airport. There were no yellow X's on the runway or any other symbol depicting the closure of the runway.
