Narrative:
We were in the vicinity of coyle VOR 9000 ft. The smoke light illuminated. We declared an emergency. We completed all necessary emergency and normal checklists and procedures. We diverted to acy and evacuate/evacuationed the aircraft. When we were done, we forgot to write up the pbe, which was removed from its container breaking the seals. This is the second false smoke emergency I have had since last summer. I believe it was 2 separate aircraft (both dash 8's). Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated this was the 4TH false compartment smoke warning since nov/98. The reporter said the fix was replacement of a sensor. The reporter said because the units are mounted in the baggage compartment they probably take quite a beating from thrown baggage.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A DEHAVILLAND DASH 8 IN CRUISE AT 9000 FT DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO A BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT SMOKE WARNING CAUSED BY A FAILED SENSOR.
Narrative: WE WERE IN THE VICINITY OF COYLE VOR 9000 FT. THE SMOKE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. WE DECLARED AN EMER. WE COMPLETED ALL NECESSARY EMER AND NORMAL CHKLISTS AND PROCS. WE DIVERTED TO ACY AND EVACED THE ACFT. WHEN WE WERE DONE, WE FORGOT TO WRITE UP THE PBE, WHICH WAS REMOVED FROM ITS CONTAINER BREAKING THE SEALS. THIS IS THE SECOND FALSE SMOKE EMER I HAVE HAD SINCE LAST SUMMER. I BELIEVE IT WAS 2 SEPARATE ACFT (BOTH DASH 8'S). CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THIS WAS THE 4TH FALSE COMPARTMENT SMOKE WARNING SINCE NOV/98. THE RPTR SAID THE FIX WAS REPLACEMENT OF A SENSOR. THE RPTR SAID BECAUSE THE UNITS ARE MOUNTED IN THE BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT THEY PROBABLY TAKE QUITE A BEATING FROM THROWN BAGGAGE.
