Narrative:
I was using a contract pilot that had never flown with us before. He had many hours in our type of aircraft at a neighboring airport with control tower. I was setting up the navigation system and he was getting our clearance. I heard the controller say 'how long until you're ready to take off?' I never heard the controller say we were cleared for departure. We continued our taxi to the departure end of the runway. We did a few more checks and I asked the copilot if we were 'cleared to go.' he said 'on course and 300 ft.' we took off and contacted departure. The controller said that we had not been released. I guess I had assumed that the contract pilot had heard that we were cleared for departure and that he was more familiar with the departure procedures at an uncontrolled airport.

Title: FLC OF A CPR JET TOOK OFF WITHOUT IFR RELEASE DUE TO THE FO'S UNFAMILIARITY WITH AN IFR DEP FROM AN UNCTLED ARPT.
Narrative: I WAS USING A CONTRACT PLT THAT HAD NEVER FLOWN WITH US BEFORE. HE HAD MANY HRS IN OUR TYPE OF ACFT AT A NEIGHBORING ARPT WITH CTL TWR. I WAS SETTING UP THE NAV SYS AND HE WAS GETTING OUR CLRNC. I HEARD THE CTLR SAY 'HOW LONG UNTIL YOU'RE READY TO TAKE OFF?' I NEVER HEARD THE CTLR SAY WE WERE CLRED FOR DEP. WE CONTINUED OUR TAXI TO THE DEP END OF THE RWY. WE DID A FEW MORE CHKS AND I ASKED THE COPLT IF WE WERE 'CLRED TO GO.' HE SAID 'ON COURSE AND 300 FT.' WE TOOK OFF AND CONTACTED DEP. THE CTLR SAID THAT WE HAD NOT BEEN RELEASED. I GUESS I HAD ASSUMED THAT THE CONTRACT PLT HAD HEARD THAT WE WERE CLRED FOR DEP AND THAT HE WAS MORE FAMILIAR WITH THE DEP PROCS AT AN UNCTLED ARPT.
