Narrative:
I was practicing automatic rotating to the grass between the taxiway and runway 17 at hou airport. We did an automatic rotation to the grass and sat down. Hou tower asked us to hold our position and cleared an air carrier for takeoff. He asked if we were clear of the safety zone. From the position we were in, I could see a yellow strip and responded we were clear. However, when we picked back up to a hover, I noticed that we were in line with the yellow line for the safety zone. That was on a perpendicular taxiway in front of us. I should have planned to always remain outside the zone or selected another localizer to do the automatic rotation instruction.

Title: AN INSTRUCTOR AND STUDENT, IN A HILLER H12T, AUTO ROTATE AND LAND WITHIN THE SAFETY ZONE OF THE ACTIVE RWY WITHOUT BEING AWARE OF IT UNTIL AFTER AN ACR HAD ALREADY DEPARTED.
