Narrative:
Aircraft X, a C340/I, departed hky direct to rnc. Latitude/longitude were in the flight plan N3341/E308550, with 'coords are rnc' in the remarks. This is an accepted, although unofficial, practice on flight plans. The latitude/longitude were wrong. There is no way for a controller to check this information to ensure accuracy. This is just another example of technology out running the FAA. This is a common occurrence these days. It contributes to the general confusion in ATC and distracts the controllers from their work of separating airplanes. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: multiple attempts without response.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A FILED FLT PLAN WITH DIRECT ROUTING FROM HKY TO RNC ARPT HAS INCORRECT LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE. CTLR CONCERNED THAT HE IS UNABLE TO VERIFY LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE, WHICH ADDS TO SITUATIONAL CONFUSION AND DISTR.
Narrative: ACFT X, A C340/I, DEPARTED HKY DIRECT TO RNC. LATITUDE/LONGITUDE WERE IN THE FLT PLAN N3341/E308550, WITH 'COORDS ARE RNC' IN THE REMARKS. THIS IS AN ACCEPTED, ALTHOUGH UNOFFICIAL, PRACTICE ON FLT PLANS. THE LATITUDE/LONGITUDE WERE WRONG. THERE IS NO WAY FOR A CTLR TO CHK THIS INFO TO ENSURE ACCURACY. THIS IS JUST ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF TECHNOLOGY OUT RUNNING THE FAA. THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE THESE DAYS. IT CONTRIBUTES TO THE GENERAL CONFUSION IN ATC AND DISTRACTS THE CTLRS FROM THEIR WORK OF SEPARATING AIRPLANES. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS WITHOUT RESPONSE.
