Narrative:

On approach to runway 22L at ewr airport, we were #2 behind an ATR72. He was cleared to circle and make short approach to runway 29. At about 1000 ft MSL, I told the tower controller I did not think this was going to work. He said, 'it looks good, you are cleared to land runway 22L.' at 300 ft, I instructed the first officer to make a go around. At about the same time the ATR72 captain also decided to go around. We had to make approximately 60-70 degree bank to the right to remain clear of the ATR72. The tower controller never said another word.
