Narrative:
On descent into sarasota, we were given the STAR by a controller. The next controller told us to cross 35 mi out at 13000 ft from either srq VOR or pie VOR. My crew can't remember if the controller actually said pie, but twice our readback was 'cross 35 mi out at 13000 ft from srq.' planning runway 35 at 13000 ft srq put us at 17000 ft from pie at a distance of 35 mi. The STAR is bused on the srq VOR, and that's what I was looking at when we twice read it back. The controller asked what our altitude was (17000 ft), and what our distance from pie was (35 mi). That is when we realized we were 4000 ft off from what he wanted, and he told us to expedite to 13000 ft and call the next controller. Uneventful after that. Looking back, we cannot remember him saying pie VOR, and our readback was srq VOR.
