Narrative:

Flight from atl to ewr. We were given direct athens flight plan route via pre departure clearance ahn J208 hpw J191 pxt rbv 1 -- ewr. We had route-checked this against the FMC route loaded and both pilots felt the route was entered correctly at the gate. After a handoff from ZTL and a direct ahn clearance, we selected direct ahn. After approximately 25 mins past ahn, ZTL queried us about our route. The FMC said direct hpw. Upon checking with lib on 113.0, we were approximately 6.8 mi left of course (J208). We asked if direct lib then flight plan route was ok. Center said yes, so we flew that route. Either we miskeyed the initial route entry or did so later in the flight and didn't catch it.

Narrative: FLT FROM ATL TO EWR. WE WERE GIVEN DIRECT ATHENS FLT PLAN RTE VIA PDC AHN J208 HPW J191 PXT RBV 1 -- EWR. WE HAD RTE-CHKED THIS AGAINST THE FMC RTE LOADED AND BOTH PLTS FELT THE RTE WAS ENTERED CORRECTLY AT THE GATE. AFTER A HDOF FROM ZTL AND A DIRECT AHN CLRNC, WE SELECTED DIRECT AHN. AFTER APPROX 25 MINS PAST AHN, ZTL QUERIED US ABOUT OUR RTE. THE FMC SAID DIRECT HPW. UPON CHKING WITH LIB ON 113.0, WE WERE APPROX 6.8 MI L OF COURSE (J208). WE ASKED IF DIRECT LIB THEN FLT PLAN RTE WAS OK. CTR SAID YES, SO WE FLEW THAT RTE. EITHER WE MISKEYED THE INITIAL RTE ENTRY OR DID SO LATER IN THE FLT AND DIDN'T CATCH IT.
