Narrative:

The customer brought the aircraft to our facility with several squawks, including oil leaks on both engines and a fluctuating manifold pressure problem on the left engine. Subsequent and lengthy maintenance solved all problems. I was assigned to reinstall and secure both turbo outlet ducts, after which the aircraft was released to the customer. Apparently on departure, the left engine lost power, after which the customer (pilot) returned to the airport and landed without incident. Removal of the engine cowl revealed the problem (cause) as the inboard turbo outlet duct 'popped' off from its clamp. A thorough cleaning of the duct and components, removing all traces of oil and a change of retaining clamps solved the problem. Contributing factors: 1) rushing the maintenance with customer distrs. 2) old style ducts used. Newer ducts alleviate this problem (mandatory change of the old style duct south/B warranted required).

Title: AN AEROSTAR 602P JUST AFTER TKOF DECLARED AN EMER AND RETURNED TO THE FIELD DUE TO THE L ENG LOSS OF PWR CAUSED BY A DISCONNECTED TURBO OUTLET DUCT.

Narrative: THE CUSTOMER BROUGHT THE ACFT TO OUR FACILITY WITH SEVERAL SQUAWKS, INCLUDING OIL LEAKS ON BOTH ENGS AND A FLUCTUATING MANIFOLD PRESSURE PROB ON THE L ENG. SUBSEQUENT AND LENGTHY MAINT SOLVED ALL PROBS. I WAS ASSIGNED TO REINSTALL AND SECURE BOTH TURBO OUTLET DUCTS, AFTER WHICH THE ACFT WAS RELEASED TO THE CUSTOMER. APPARENTLY ON DEP, THE L ENG LOST PWR, AFTER WHICH THE CUSTOMER (PLT) RETURNED TO THE ARPT AND LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. REMOVAL OF THE ENG COWL REVEALED THE PROB (CAUSE) AS THE INBOARD TURBO OUTLET DUCT 'POPPED' OFF FROM ITS CLAMP. A THOROUGH CLEANING OF THE DUCT AND COMPONENTS, REMOVING ALL TRACES OF OIL AND A CHANGE OF RETAINING CLAMPS SOLVED THE PROB. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: 1) RUSHING THE MAINT WITH CUSTOMER DISTRS. 2) OLD STYLE DUCTS USED. NEWER DUCTS ALLEVIATE THIS PROB (MANDATORY CHANGE OF THE OLD STYLE DUCT S/B WARRANTED REQUIRED).
