Narrative:
I departed vny on the canoga seven SID. It states that after departure from runway 16R to maintain runway heading, to cross fim R-104 or vny 1.5 DME at or below 1700 ft, then turn right to a 210 degree heading. It then states to expect a vector to vny VOR, then via (transition) or (assigned route). The clearance I was given cleared me to me as filed, canoga seven departure, maintain 4000 ft, expect 10000 ft in 5 mins, gorman direct, departure frequency 134.2, squawk XXXX. I later realized I was confused by this clearance and the assigned SID. Since I was not given instructions that I would be flying to the vny VOR and instead told to fly direct to the gorman VOR, I incorrectly assumed I was not to fly the 210 degree heading. It took too long to recover since piloting duties distracted me from immediate attention to my navigation problem, and departure control patiently got me straightened out. I believe the SID I was instructed to fly did not conform to vny canoga seven SID, but I should have asked questions when I was being given the clearance.

Title: M20 BECOMES TASK FIXED AND NEGLECTS TO FLY SID PROC.
Narrative: I DEPARTED VNY ON THE CANOGA SEVEN SID. IT STATES THAT AFTER DEP FROM RWY 16R TO MAINTAIN RWY HEADING, TO CROSS FIM R-104 OR VNY 1.5 DME AT OR BELOW 1700 FT, THEN TURN R TO A 210 DEG HDG. IT THEN STATES TO EXPECT A VECTOR TO VNY VOR, THEN VIA (TRANSITION) OR (ASSIGNED RTE). THE CLRNC I WAS GIVEN CLRED ME TO ME AS FILED, CANOGA SEVEN DEP, MAINTAIN 4000 FT, EXPECT 10000 FT IN 5 MINS, GORMAN DIRECT, DEP FREQ 134.2, SQUAWK XXXX. I LATER REALIZED I WAS CONFUSED BY THIS CLRNC AND THE ASSIGNED SID. SINCE I WAS NOT GIVEN INSTRUCTIONS THAT I WOULD BE FLYING TO THE VNY VOR AND INSTEAD TOLD TO FLY DIRECT TO THE GORMAN VOR, I INCORRECTLY ASSUMED I WAS NOT TO FLY THE 210 DEG HDG. IT TOOK TOO LONG TO RECOVER SINCE PILOTING DUTIES DISTRACTED ME FROM IMMEDIATE ATTN TO MY NAV PROB, AND DEP CTL PATIENTLY GOT ME STRAIGHTENED OUT. I BELIEVE THE SID I WAS INSTRUCTED TO FLY DID NOT CONFORM TO VNY CANOGA SEVEN SID, BUT I SHOULD HAVE ASKED QUESTIONS WHEN I WAS BEING GIVEN THE CLRNC.
