Narrative:
During IFR training flight, I showed my student how to pick up an IFR clearance by using remote preflight radio service. We were given a clearance valid time and a clearance void time. According to our timer, we took off on the clearance valid time. Once airborne, when we contacted dtw departure, they told us that we were 2 mins early and that we just had violated an FAA direct order. I told the controller that we were sorry and that our timing must have been off compared with theirs. Regardless, the WX was ceilings 5000 ft AGL, visibility unrestr (VFR). In my own perception, the timer in the airplane was slightly off, and I should have used a second timer for better accuracy. I will now be using a second timer for all timing procedures.
