Narrative:
While flying the noise abatement departure for runway 36 at dca, at 1500 ft MSL, when a reduced climb power setting is directed, the full power climb power setting was selected inadvertently. It was not corrected until approximately 2500 ft MSL. Probable cause was taking off in normal power, combined with high task workload of the river departure. Perhaps extra deliberate selection of the appropriate switches could have prevented this momentary aberration. Supplemental information from acn 434869: departing north (runway 36) noise abatement climb out of national. At 1500 ft, go to climb-2 power. The first officer called for VNAV, climb-2 power, flaps 5 degrees. I selected VNAV, climb power, flaps 5 degrees, while also watching the departure route visually over the river. I then noticed us climbing faster than usual and saw that we were at full climb power. Climb power was incorrectly set. I should have deliberately pushed climb power, then climb-2 power, and verified it. Also, I should have briefed the other pilot to verify the climb-2 power setting. We are both very busy on that departure.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B757 FLC DEVIATES FROM THE NOISE ABATEMENT SOUND LEVELS AT DCA WHEN THE CAPT SELECTS CLB PWR ON THE MODE SELECTOR VERSUS CLB-2 PWR.
Narrative: WHILE FLYING THE NOISE ABATEMENT DEP FOR RWY 36 AT DCA, AT 1500 FT MSL, WHEN A REDUCED CLB PWR SETTING IS DIRECTED, THE FULL PWR CLB PWR SETTING WAS SELECTED INADVERTENTLY. IT WAS NOT CORRECTED UNTIL APPROX 2500 FT MSL. PROBABLE CAUSE WAS TAKING OFF IN NORMAL PWR, COMBINED WITH HIGH TASK WORKLOAD OF THE RIVER DEP. PERHAPS EXTRA DELIBERATE SELECTION OF THE APPROPRIATE SWITCHES COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS MOMENTARY ABERRATION. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 434869: DEPARTING N (RWY 36) NOISE ABATEMENT CLBOUT OF NATIONAL. AT 1500 FT, GO TO CLB-2 PWR. THE FO CALLED FOR VNAV, CLB-2 PWR, FLAPS 5 DEGS. I SELECTED VNAV, CLB PWR, FLAPS 5 DEGS, WHILE ALSO WATCHING THE DEP RTE VISUALLY OVER THE RIVER. I THEN NOTICED US CLBING FASTER THAN USUAL AND SAW THAT WE WERE AT FULL CLB PWR. CLB PWR WAS INCORRECTLY SET. I SHOULD HAVE DELIBERATELY PUSHED CLB PWR, THEN CLB-2 PWR, AND VERIFIED IT. ALSO, I SHOULD HAVE BRIEFED THE OTHER PLT TO VERIFY THE CLB-2 PWR SETTING. WE ARE BOTH VERY BUSY ON THAT DEP.
