Narrative:

Ferrying an experimental aerosport from florida, called up sav approach for entry to fuel in sav. Had transponder but mode C had been reading erroneous to ATC. Advised ATC no mode C. Landed, fueled. ATC advised of class C airspace, got waiver to exit. On departure, told to fly heading 090 degrees. Turned to 270 degrees since no directional gyro installed. Classic mistake with wet compass. Long day! Would not have stopped in sav, but no corridor west of field to pass through at low altitude and east of field no suitable terrain for landing, ie marsh.
